What's the difference between a single and twin axle touring caravan?

Published:

The difference between a single and twin axle caravan lies in the number of axles and wheels, which impacts various aspects of the caravan's performance, handling, and suitability for different purposes.

Each have their own features and advantages, but it ultimately comes down to personal preference and individual needs, so let’s go into both in more detail:

Single axle caravans

A single axle has one axle and two wheels (one on each side) which generally makes the vehicle lighter than twin axle caravans. They are often easier to manoeuvre and tow, especially in tight spaces.

They are typically less expensive due to twin axle caravans having more interior furniture, a higher specification and fewer wheels/axles.

Advantages:

  • Easier to tow and handle, especially for those new to caravanning
  • Better for shorter trips or lighter loads
  • Usually less wear and tear on the tow vehicle

Disadvantages:

  • Lower load capacity, making it less suitable for carrying heavy loads

Twin axle caravans

A twin axle has two axles and four wheels (two on each side), which generally makes them heavier than single axle caravans.

They offer greater stability on the road, especially at higher speeds and in windy conditions. They also offer a higher load capacity, allowing for more storage and amenities.

Advantages:

  • Enhanced stability and handling, particularly for larger, heavier caravans
  • Better suited for long-distance travel
  • Greater load capacity allows for more amenities and comfort

Disadvantages:

  • More challenging to manoeuvre and park, especially in tight spaces
  • Higher initial cost and increased maintenance expenses due to the additional wheels and axles
  • Increased wear on the tow vehicle due to the heavier weight

Summary

In summary, the choice between single and twin axles ultimately comes down to personal preference and individual needs. If the required number of berths is particularly important, most single axles are 2 or 4 berth with just one six berth, whilst a twin axle can sleep a minimum of 4 and up to 6 people (layout specific). Also for consideration, are the caravan widths; the Sprite is available with widths of 2.03m, 2.25m and 2.46m. The Challenger SE comes in 2.28m and 2.45m whilst all Elegance Grande models are 2.45m wide (external dimensions).
